How do we “connect with nature”?

But first, what does this term mean?

Researchers in a 2014 study describe connecting with nature as a consciousness that is reflected through behaviors and actions that support our inseparable connection with the natural world. Our attitudes, perceptions, and actions support the degree to which we are connected to nature.

In this literature review, the authors discuss a “knowing-doing gap” and the disconnect between practitioners of connecting with nature and decision makers. We know we should spend more time in nature (the research demonstrating health benefits abounds) but what can be created to close this gap, and most importantly, to help and support people in their actions - the doing part - of connecting to nature?

One suggestion I propose to help close this gap is relationship-building between virtual health programs and local outdoor recreation providers.  If you would like to start this conversation, I am offering my assistance. Contact me today to discuss this exciting opportunity.  Let’s build a culture of wellness and connection to nature.
